Queensland Centre for Population Research (QCPR)
The Queensland Centre for Population Research undertakes pure and applied research and provides education and training in demography and population geography. The work of the centre focuses especially on demographic change at the local and regional level, both within Australia and overseas and encompasses theory, methodology and empirical analysis.
Research interests focus particularly on population mobility, internal migration and the development of demographic forecasting models.
The Centre has a collaborative Research Agreement with the Office of Economic and Statistical Research of Queensland Treasury. The two organisations collaborate on a range of demographic research projects, particularly in the field of demographic forecasting.

Global population at 7 billion
The United Nations has designated 31st October 2011 as the day in which the global population passes 7 billion. The Population Reference Bureau has created an excellent website describing world population trends, which includes an interactive map, data sheet and video. Australia's future net overseas migration: What do the experts think?
In late 2010 the Queensland Centre for Population Research undertook a survey of Australia's migration experts to obtain views on the direction net overseas migration might take over the next 20 years. This paper summarises the results.
Cross-national study of internal migration
Professor Martin Bell, together with Professor John Stillwell (Leeds), Dr Marek Kupiszewski (Warsaw) and Professor Dr Yu Zhu (Fujian), has been awarded $920,000 by the Australian Research Council for a 4 year study ‘Comparing internal migration in countries around the world: measures, theories and policy dimensions’. The project will make rigorous cross national comparisons of mobility, explain how and why it varies so widely between countries around the world and help refine policies that affect mobility.
Postgraduate research opportunities
QCPR is delighted to invite applications for four postgraduate research scholarships linked to the newly funded ARC Discovery Project on Cross-National Comparisons of Internal Migration. Applicants will work on a range of topics focusing on regions throughout the world and will have the opportunity to spend up to three months working with one of our partner investigators in the UK, Poland or China.
POPCORN
A new population projection model has been developed and is now available from QCPR. POPCORN, POpulation Projections for a COuntry’s RegioNs, is a multiregional cohort-component model that has relatively low input data requirements. It produces projections by age and sex for up to 75 regions over a projection horizon of up to 50 years. Details are available at http://www.gpem.uq.edu.au/qcpr-software
