The School has a strong research profile. It supports research activity across all of its fields of expertise, organised into a number of research groups and formally constituted Research Centres. It enjoys a considerable success rate in nationally competitive grants, and its staff participate in four Cooperative Research Centres. Staff and graduate students have a solid record of high quality publications.

 

The School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Management is one of the fastest growing schools at UQ with a leading role in teaching and research in environment and sustainability. Our aim is to “understand  the processes and structures of natural and human settlement systems and their built environments and use this knowledge to inform institutional arrangements for policy, planning  and  management capabilities  to enable sustainable development”. This framework underpins teaching and research in all areas of the School.  The School is grounded in the established disciplines of Geography, Planning and Environmental Management and their related programs.

The School has formulated a proposal for the enhancement of Environmental Management at UQ which expands existing offerings and forges new links to other key areas of expertise in the field of environmental studies at UQ.

Undergraduate student numbers in 2008 stood at 815 (EFTSL) with a further 163 students enrolled in postgraduate coursework and 53 in research higher degrees. The current staffing complement consists of 31 academic staff including three Professors and three Associate Professors, supported by 14 technical, administrative and professional staff. There are a growing number of research appointments associated with the Research Centres and CRCs, and the School has made a range of adjunct appointments from leaders in government and the professions

 

On St Lucia Campus, the School occupies Levels 4 and 5 of the Chamberlain Building (35). It has three modern computing labs, General Computing Lab [35-432] (31 PCs), Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing Lab [35-401] (38 PCs) and dedicated Postgraduate Lab [35-402] (10 PCs) with multiple printers and scanners. A modern Physical Geography Analysis Lab [35-523] is also in the Chamberlain Building along with three modern lecture rooms, 414 (40 seats), 415 (30 seats), 519 (40 seats).
